Strategy: Money Matters at the BoSP Forum

Warwick Mihaly visited Perth recently to discuss the financial side of practice, at the BoSP forum organised by the Western Australian chapter of the ACA.

Warwick Mihaly of Mihaly Slocombe, talking about how he and partner Erica are transforming their practice, at the BoSP in Perth.

Other architects who shared their insight into the business side of practice included Nick Juniper of The Fulcrum.Agency, and Patrick Miller of Finespun Architecture, who operates a mobile studio from his customised van.

These three architects discussed innovative and unconventional ways to make a buck in architecture, and shared favourite apps and tools they use to transform their businesses.

I think that as architects we need to invest as much eff ort into the business side as we dedicate to design,” Mihaly said. “And I believe that if we were better at business – and if we knew our value to our clients, and could quantify that in the way that lawyers do – we’d be able to grow the [market share] pie, not have to compete over an increasingly shrinking pie.”
