Are you ready to go carbon neutral in 2021?
If you were a subscriber a year ago, you may remember that I wrote a series of articles about how to count your carbon footprint in February 2020.
You can find those articles via this link if you’d like to read them now:
First, I started trying to calculate our household greenhouse gas emissions in a spreadsheet that I created, and when I shared that with subscribers, Pippa Hurst of DesignFreo told me about a local start up that has an App to do just that.
Great, I thought, an App seems way easier than my clunky spreadsheet, so I got in touch with the CEO and Founder, Dr Vanessa Rauland who is based in nearby Freo. We had a few meetings where it quickly became apparent that we share the same enthusiasm for tackling climate change, and I introduced her to the team at Architects Declare.
That led to me starting work for ClimateClever in April – on their marketing and communications – and around that time I was also helping to write the Guide to going carbon neutral for Architects Declare.
That document – which you can download for free here – arose from Breathe Architecture’s campaign called Architects Act, which encouraged signatories to make their practices carbon neutral in 2020.
I took up that challenge as well, switching to 100% Greenpower at home (where I work) and calculating our footprint using the ClimateClever Homes App. I haven’t yet offset our 2020 emissions to complete the cycle, but it’s on the list of things to do when school goes back (which is now a week later, thanks to the snap lockdown in Perth. Life, hey?).
Anyway, why am I telling you this?
ClimateClever has now released its third App for Businesses (following early Apps for Schools and Homes). This web-based App enables Businesses of all types – including architecture practices – to measure their emissions, audit their appliances and usage habits, and commit to tried-and-tested actions that will help them achieve reductions.
All of the suggested actions will generate both carbon and $$$ savings, and some are easy and free to implement, while others might require a medium to large investment. You can also come up with your own actions and assign them to a team member with a deadline, so they actually get done, then report on your costs and results.
One of my actions last year involved swapping out all of our halogen downlights for LEDs last year, which should reap consumption savings in the range of 80% for those fixtures. Pretty good huh!
There are so many great features and benefits of the App, including:
It’s an affordable and easy-to-implement way to measure and reduce your carbon and save money;
ClimateClever offers tonnes of support including live chat in the App, demos and webinars, social media community groups and more;
You can use the Business App as the first step to getting certified by Climate Active if you’d like to go down that path;
You’ll join a community of like-minded schools, households and business all taking positive steps to reduce their carbon emissions; and
You can buy Homes Apps for your team members and/or clients (it would make a great addition to your residential handover package), and their de-identified and aggregated data can be added to your Business account, so you can measure your impact across the wider community.
The best news – which I’ve saved until last, so well done you if you are still reading this! – is that the Business App is currently 50% off for the month of February, and that price is locked in for two years.
If you’d like to find out more about how it works or see inside, you can email my ClimateClever colleagues to request a demo or visit the website.
I know I sound a bit like an evangelist – I told Vanessa that I’m like that Remington ad, “I liked it so much I joined (not bought) the company!” – and it’s fair to say that everyone working for this locally grown WA start up shares my passion.
So if you think you’d like to join us and make a difference through collective action, we’d love to have you!
